Hope 2 Oban

7 years of Hope 2 Oban

1st June 2011 marked seven years since H2O began providing innovative and dynamic Christian youth work in Oban and the surrounding area. A worthwhile milestone to note! Over that period, H2O has strengthened its involvement in Oban High School, attending most weekdays, providing additional trusted ‘listening ears’, as well as consolidating and coordinating the school Chaplaincy team and attending Glencruitten Hostel, weekday home for young folks from the Inner Hebrides. Partnership working within the town has also been cemented through the high school Pathways programme and the local representation of NEET (‘not in employment, education or training’), known as Bright Futures Group or BFG. Joint working has enabled events such as the H2O Lock-in at Atlantis Leisure, ‘Wacky, Wet and Dry’ outdoor activities with Stramash and Kilbowie Outdoor Centre as well as reinforcing the work of the SSC (a club for the youth of Scotland) seasonal events.

So, what did a 7th year celebration look like?

5-12th June - Space

Situated for the week in the H2O base, The Well, ‘Space’ provided a prayerful opportunity for reflection and contemplation for young and not-so-young. Folks from local churches were invited to come along and pray around areas including ‘The World’, ‘Forgiveness’, ‘Human Trafficking’, ‘Who is God to you?’ and ‘You’, an area to reflecti on identity and our own individuality and uniqueness. It was also an opportunity to give prayerful thanks for the youth work of Hope 2 Oban, and for intercession, looking to the future of God’s Kingdom work in Oban and the surrounding area.

4th June - Bonkers Bikers - Sponsored cycle

Following on from the previous year’s event, eleven intrepid, hardy souls took to the roads and lanes of the local area, cycling either 14 miles or 34 miles (depending on current fitness levels) to have fun raising funds for the work of H2O. Start and finish for the circuits was Glencruitten House, the location for several events in the week-long, activity-filled time of celebration.

Pop-up Cafe7th June - Pop up café

The setting, Oban Chocolate Factory! Sounds like a good plan. Highlights from seven years of H2O youth work on display and guests invited from local partners, churches and the surrounding area. In essence, an informal opportunity to socialise and celebrate the past seven years!

9th June - Garden Party

Birthdays for H2O, 7 years and for local lass Claire Nicol, 90years!

Ongoing birthday celebrations this week as Club H2O carried on the party mood with their very own Garden Party at splendid Glencruitten House. Birthday Cake, afternoon tea and simple friendly fellowship combined to provide a good time for all, along with those special 90th birthday wishes from all at the Club to Claire - Happy Birthday Claire!

10th June - Fischy Music

Over the past 7 years, H2O have invited Fischy Music to Oban to share their very special style of encouragement and enthusiasm with primary school pupils from the Oban and Lorne area. On this, the fourth occasion, the Fischy team continued to share with p5-p7 pupils, positive messages on anti-bullying and building self-esteem through music, dance and lots of fun.

This whistle-stop visit included 3 morning workshops, with each group creating their own song verse and ‘solo’ action song, followed by an afternoon performance where all 130 plus pupils and their teachers, sang danced and laughed together with the Fischy team of Suzanne and Sandy.

A big thank you goes to Fischy and to the primary schools who took part.

“Nice People! It was unforgettable and great fun making our own song. I loved it!”
“It was really good that there were other schools”
“Everyone was included”
“It was fun because we all got to do our own song”
“It was original”

10 – 12th June - Westward Quest

As the birthday celebrations began to draw to a close at the end of a busy week, members of GFG, the Tuesday evening Christian faith exploration group for P7 – S4, took to high jinks on the high seas. GFG celebrated 7 years of H2O Youth Work with a weekend sail on 'Weaver' the 42 foot yacht from Westward Quest.

Ten took part in the sailing adventure, the majority having never been in a sailing yacht before. Destinations over the busy weekend included Crinan, Jura, Scarba, Lunga, The Garvellachs and Loch Spelve on Mull, and passing, Luing, Seil and Easedale on the way

Words from the on-board video diary included ‘I want to learn to steer’ and I can’t wait to mop the decks’. There’s no doubt that all involved quickly learned lots about being together and working together! Such are the ‘benefits’ of a floating, residential shared experience. Great fun was has by all and it is hoped that one or two will continue to develop their newly-honed sailing skills in the future.

Birthday Cake12th June - Birthday Party @ Glencruitten House

The culmination of a very busy week was the final celebration at Glencruitten House. It had all been such fun!

Bikes, boats, cake, songs and chocolate!!!! What more could a birthday need.

A great big ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone who made this a very special 7th birthday for Hope 2 Oban. As a Christian youth work charity, we continue to pray for the exciting life-changing journey we believe we are on as we continue to aim to serve the young people of Oban and the surrounding area through innovative and dynamic Christian youth work.
